Church History
The history of Truth Baptist Church is preserved with the hope of inspiring our present and future congregation. It is our prayer that they will protect the vision of those who labored and endured the hardships for the planning and developing our current church for its members and community.
Truth Baptist church was founded in 1991 by Rev. Walter C. Walker and First Lady Emma L. Walker in their home meeting for Bible Study. They moved the services to the building where Rev. Walker used it as his upholstery shop. There were eight members at that time and visitors who fellowship every Sunday at 11:00 am. The current location is 5934 ½ Ames Road, Columbia, South Carolina was purchased. The musician was his daughter, Martina Walker. The church grew over the years and community and church events were held under the leadership of Rev. Walter C. Walker and First Lady Emma Walker. The members were baptized in his pool at their residence. A partnership was developed with Reverend Eddie Woods and Rev. Alvan Chaplain where their congregation fellowship together with Truth in church programs. Much effort was made to ensure the needs of the church were met by purchasing the church supplies and furniture. We thank God for the vision and foundation laid by the founders. Reverend Walter C. Walker served over 40 years in the ministry as a Faithful Servant to God and being a great Pastor for the congregation. He made a decision for a new pastor to continue the foundation that has been set for a future Pastor of Truth Baptist Church.
Reverend Terry N. Green and his wife visited Truth Baptist Church in October 2015. In November, the church gave Thanksgiving to the community, Rev. Green and his wife, donated two turkeys’. He fell in love with Truth making a commitment of building upon the foundation set forth by Rev. Walker. Truth congregation and founders fell in love with him. He was confirmed as the new pastor in February 2015. Since he became pastor, we have increased the number of baskets for Thanksgiving, restarted Bible Study on Wednesday nights, appointed officers of the church, Several ministries have been started, and the growth of the members has increased. Under his leadership, he has trained our four Ministers, created the Bylaws and Constitution and developed a church handbook. Purchased a Church Van, developed a church building fund, a refrigerator and stove were donated for the kitchen area, repairs have been made to the church and improvements were made to the Pastor’s study, and future renovations of the church building are being developed. Pastor Green, made plans for the first church revival during our church anniversary was held on January 2017. He has worked with the men of the church developing the Brotherhood Ministry. Youth involvement has increased. The church musicians we now have in which pastor named them “BIC” Boys In the Corner, they light up service with their gifts of playing, also a set of drums, guitar, and a Keyboard were purchased. We have joined and been members of the Gethsemane Association since 2016.
Ministries at the church are designed to promote Salvation and Faith, heightened Worship and Praise. These ministries include Usher Board, Health and Wellness, Membership, Music, Brotherhood, Praise Team, Youth Department, Ministers of the House, Sunday School and Bible Study.
We praise God for all his goodness through the years and pray that our accomplishments and service are a reflection of His glory.
